“In his work... he showed an absolute faith and sincerity which was never shaken, and his deep concern for the individual meant that much of this time was spent in visiting or helping people in trouble.”

Social Action

This category is divided into four sub-categories. Applications must focus on at least one of the following four themes:

1. Criminal Justice

Within this sub-category we are currently looking to support projects that help people who have offended break free from the cycle of reoffending, so they can rebuild their lives as contributing members of society.

2. Freedom from Addiction and Substance Misuse

Within this sub-category we are currently looking to support projects that help people move beyond addiction and substance misuse into long-term, sustained recovery. We favour community-based and peer-led approaches that support people to rebuild stable, independent lives.

3. Human Rights & Equality

Within this sub-category we are currently looking to support projects that can demonstrate that they are successfully integrating refugees and asylum seekers into established UK communities, giving them the support and connections to rebuild their lives.

4. The Prevention & Relief of Poverty

Applications within this sub-category should be from organisations that are not only tackling the symptoms of financial poverty, but are also recognising and addressing the underlying/root causes. Organisations championing systemic change are viewed most favourably.

Please note that we rarely give grants to organisations that are focussed upon emergency relief (e.g. food banks, fuel banks, refuges and crisis accommodation). Also, we rarely fund charities that provide statutory services (e.g. adult social care, children’s services and general education) and we do not provide replacement funding where statutory support has been withdrawn.

We favour causes that are community-focused, make good use of volunteers, meet a tangible need and are well-connected and well-regarded within their locality.
